The system is configured with a dual boot (Windows XP Pro) and Windows operates properly and supports all of the features of the video graphics chipset (DVI and full resolution). Using a DVI cable, the system boots and displays properly (GRUB and boot messages) until the X11 server starts, then the signal is lost. It is also stuck in 1024x768 resolution and I want it to display in 1280x1024 resolution. The mount works and I can see the files (see above) from my regular linux user account. I did have the USB drive plugged into the Linux machine directly and that was working via the web. I have a problem where I'm using Ubuntu linux to mount a Windows Vista machine's USB drive and access it on the web using Apache.
